Jim Griffo

Jim Griffo, AIA, IIDA, LEED AP, is a Partner and Senior Vice President in charge of Gresham, Smith and Partners’ office in Birmingham. GS&P is a full service Architecture, Interior Design, Planning and Engineering firm with offices throughout the Southeast. Jim has been with GS&P since 1987 when he relocated from Atlanta to join the firm as Director of Interior Design. His involvement with IIDA began soon after his arrival in Alabama and he has served on many IIDA committees as well as serving as President of the Alabama Chapter.



Jim has been involved in a broad range of corporate, commercial and institutional projects for clients including Wells Fargo, Mercedes, Coca-Cola, UAB, Vulcan Materials Company and Alabama Power Company.



Jim received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from Georgia Tech and began his career with ASD in Atlanta. Before coming to work for GS&P in Birmingham, he also worked for Cooper Carry and Hendrick Associates. He has served as president of the local chapters of the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA), the International Facility Management Association (IFMA), and the American Heart Association. Jim has served on the Interior Design Advisory Boards of The University of Alabama, Auburn University and Samford University. He is a registered Architect and Interior Designer in multiple states and holds both NCIDQ and NCARB certificates.

Abby Owen

Abby Owen has been working as a designer since her 2004 graduation from The University of Alabama. She does mainly commercial design, including corporate, municipal, restaurants, & more. She has been a member of IIDA for two years, & has served as chairperson of several different committees for the Huntsville City Center. She designs various graphics & marketing materials. Abby gets lots of design inspiration from traveling, her absolute favorite hobby. She also enjoys music, crafting, & party planning.

Nancy Jernigam

Nancy Jernigan has been practicing Interior Design in the Southeast since 1988. She is a graduate of Auburn University’s School of Architecture with a Bachelor of Interior Design. Nancy’s diverse work includes corporate, higher education, healthcare, government and retail.



A volunteer for IIDA since its inception, Nancy served on the IIDA transition team for the Alabama Chapter of IBD. After serving on the IIDA Alabama Chapter Board of Directors as Vice President of Professional Development, President Elect and President, she served a two-year term as Region 7 Director for the Association. She subsequently served on the Nominating Team for the International Board of Directors in 2002, 2004 and 2006. In 2006, Nancy served as a judge for the IIDA Showroom Competition at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago for Neocon. She serves on various committees for the Alabama Chapter including the Leaders Roundtable Advisory Board and currently sits on the Nominating Team for the Central District of the State Nominating Committee to the Alabama State Board of Registration for Interior Designers.



Her hobbies include scuba diving, camping, biking and photography.

Lydia Thomson

Lydia Thomson graduated from Auburn University in 2003 with a Bachelor of Interior Design. During that time she was a student member of IIDA and continued to become a professional member when she became NCIDQ Certified and registered with the State of Alabama as an Interior Designer. She served on the IIDA Board for Alabama from 2004 to 2006. Lydia began her carrier at Hendon & Huckestein Architects in 2004, and moved to KPS Group in 2005 where she became a LEED AP. Currently, she is in her second year at Birchfield Penuel & Associates, where she started in 2009. Outside of work, Lydia volunteers at the Church of the Highlands Dream Center in Woodlawn.

Steven Smith

A professional member of the IIDA Alabama Chapter since its inception, and a member of the previous IBD professional interior design organization since 1985, Steven has been involved in supporting the Interior Design profession for many years. NCIDQ certified, Steven is also an Alabama State Registered Interior Designer. He has a strong commitment to the industry and served as Chairman of the Alabama State Board of Registration for Interior Design from 2003 - 2007, is an active member in the Alabama Interior Design Coalition AIDC, and is also a member of the IIDA Leader's Roundtable Advisory Board from 2008 to present.

Steven graduated from Auburn University School of Architecture in 1985 with a Bachelor of Interior Design degree and a Minor in Concert Piano Performance from Birmingham-Southern College School of Music. Steven immediately joined Kidd-Plosser-Sprague Architects (now KPS Group) where he was employed through 1994. After his employment at KPS, Steven joined Williams-Blackstock Architects in 1996 and is currently in charge of their Interior Design program. In addition to Interior Design, Steven also is a partner in an art gallery, Littlehouse Galleries, which has been serving Alabama since 1960. His favorite hobbies include art, music, photography, sports cars, scuba diving, travel, and technology.

Jonathan Haas

As a student member of IIDA, Jonathan Haas received a 2011 IDIE Award for Best student project in the Mixed Use / Residential category. He graduated in December 2010 with a B.A in Interior Design and joined Davis Architects in April 2011. He lives in Birmingham and will soon be a resident of the downtown loft district. When he is not working, he enjoys spending time with friends, cycling, and product design. In the future, he plans to be an educator in some capacity, knowing that one of the greatest joys in design is helping another person use their strengths and abilities to create something beautiful.

Jenny Hardison

Jenny Hardison is a Business Development Manager for Ai Corporate Interiors. She joined Ai a year ago after working as a manufacturer's representative in Alabama and Tennessee. Jenny is responsible for sales in the Huntsville and North Alabama area. She has been in corporate furniture sales and design for almost 10years. She lives in Huntsvile, with her husband Paul, daughter Lucia and soon to be twins. When she is not working, she enjoys running marathons, cycling, camping, travelling and spending time with family.

Donna Dowling

Donna Dowling is Sr. Principle, Director of Interior Design for KPS Group, Inc. Joining KPS in 2003, Donna has focused her talents toward providing high quality design and quality service to all KPS clients. Her responsibilities include overseeing the interior design practice for the Birmingham, Atlanta and Huntsville offices. A 1982 graduate of The University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design, she began her career in Memphis, TN working in the hospitality design industry. Donna and her husband Billy relocated to Alabama to reestablish hometown roots, grow her career and begin a family. With over 28 years of design experience Donna has diversified her portfolio to include a variety of markets including corporate, developer, financial, and educational in both the private and public sector. In her spare time she enjoys cooking, anything outdoors and travelling.

Laura Morello

From finger paintings to quick sketches, Laura has always been interested in the visual arts. A native of Montgomery, AL, Laura attended high school at The Montgomery Academy where her studies focused primarily on her AP art portfolios. Moving to Birmingham in 2005, she attended Samford University and transformed her affinity for fine art into a love for Interior Design. Laura graduated from Samford University in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts plus Honors in Interior Design and an Art minor.

Realizing the necessity for designers with environmental knowledge, Laura pursued the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design accreditation in Fall 2008 and passed the LEED exam in January 2009. During her college career, she elected to take courses in anthropology, sociology and psychology because the human mindset, especially across cultures, greatly influences her design philosophy.
