Course Description: The term “sustainability” can be challenging for individuals and companies to talk about, let alone know how to use in terms of making positive changes within an industry. Part of the challenge is that there are many definitions of sustainability, and many different ways that it can be applied. The goal of this course is to discuss the term and the practice of sustainability as it applies to the building industry, focusing on ways that it can impact architects, builders, manufacturers, and building occupants. As part of the discussion, the course examines some ways that thoughtful design and material specification can promote project sustainability. And, as a focused example, it explores some of the challenges and impacts of sustainability within the textile and commercial carpet industry.
